The big island is harder to swim at because there is not as much sand. Being a new and still forming island, the lava rock has not yet eroded and crumbled into white sand. The currents can be dangerous in the winter (you can get a lot of rip tides). If you want to see a really calm beach, you should visit Waikiki. The sharks are on every island, and you cannot avoid them. Most of the time they are just small, or reef sharks. The big shark you have to worry about is the Tiger. A lot of 12 footers like to go to the first reef. Encounters are rare, for you have a better chance of getting struck by lightening than getting hurt by a shark. Just because they can encounter you, does not mean they will hurt you. Also if you would like to see the beach in LIVE VIDEO, I have provided a link at the bottom. With this site, you can browse all of the Islands, including the big one. The big island is more for sight seeing the lava, tropical forest, nature parks and much more. I hoped this helped.

P.S

Also consider goggling the Kona coasts for images and more. And on the island of Oahu, I know that there is a helicopter that flies over the beach to spot sharks. ALso, Bopx Jellyfish are common there.
