Big Island Hawaii. Part 42. Around Puna.

January 2010. Music by: Komeda. Pahoa, Puna. Pahoa is located at 19°30?4?N 154°57?11?W. In the Hawaiian language, the word ‘pahoa’ means dagger or knife. It is unknown when the indigenous Hawaiians settled the area during pre-contact times, but the deep, rich soil and important protected archeological sites in the area suggest a long history of habitation. Legends associated with the Pahoa area are referenced in Hawaii’s ancient oral history, ie, in the Pele and Hi’iaka Myth. (NB Emerson, 1915) Pahoa has a relatively high percentage of its population who walk or bicycle to work. (Pahoa, 2004) (wikipedia) Driving south out of Hilo, then through Keaau, youre in the Puna (Poo-nah) District in about 10 minutes. This moku on the eastern tip of the island stretches from the sea to the 4000-foot summit of Kilauea volcano. At one end, roiling ocean, a black-sand beach where people play drums and leave their bathing suits behind, a spring warmed by the volcanos steam. At the other end, by Kilaueas summit, more steam, yellow sulfur banks, rainforest, hula dancers giving their gift to Volcano goddess Pele here in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. On the fertile slopes between sea and summit grow an Eden of tropical fruit, flowers and vegetables-orchids, anthuriums, banana, papaya, herbs, macadamia nuts, and more.
